Why Coastal Breaks Are Hard on Jewellery

There is nothing quite like the light on the British coast. That bright, salt-laden air seems to make silver gleam and gemstones catch fire — which is exactly why so many of us pack our favourite nautical pieces for a seaside escape. A compass pendant, a rope-chain bracelet, a pair of pearl drops. The trouble is that the same environment that makes them look so good is also quietly working against them.

Salt is abrasive. Sand is worse. Sun cream and sea spray leave a film that dulls polished metal and works its way into settings. Add in the jostle of a suitcase, a beach bag and a damp towel, and you have ideal conditions for scratches, tangles and lost stones. The good news is that a few sensible habits — most of which take up barely any space — will keep everything looking as good on the journey home as it did when you set off.

Start With the Right Storage

Before you think about what to pack, think about how. A proper jewellery roll case is the single best investment for travelling with delicate pieces. Look for one with a soft interior, a tie or zip closure, and separate compartments or loops so that rings, earrings and chains never touch each other.

• Individual pouches: pop each piece into its own small velvet or cotton drawstring bag. This stops metal-on-metal contact, which is the main cause of fine surface scratches.
• Roll cases with a ring bar: ideal for stacking rings and keeping bands upright so they do not rattle around.
• Earring pairs on a card: a small stud card keeps pairs together and stops backs going missing in the lining.
• Zip-top bags for silver: ordinary small food bags are brilliant for slowing down tarnish, especially in humid coastal air.

If you already own a roll case, give it a quick check before every trip. Elastic can stretch, zips can stiffen, and a lining that has picked up sand from a previous holiday will gently sand away at whatever you put in it next.

Packing Techniques That Prevent Tangles

Chains are the great heartbreaker of holiday packing. Left loose, they will find each other in the dark and knot themselves into something that takes twenty minutes and a pin to undo. There are a few simple tricks worth knowing.

• The straw method: thread a fine chain through a drinking straw and fasten the clasp. The straw holds the chain straight and stops it looping back on itself.
• Clasp through the clasp: for slightly heavier chains, fasten the ends together and lay the chain flat in its own pouch.
• Lay flat, never bundle: stack pouches flat in the roll case rather than squashing everything into a corner.
• Wear the sturdiest piece: if you are taking one substantial necklace or bracelet, wear it on the journey rather than packing it.

Travel by car? Keep the roll case in the cabin rather than the boot, where heat can build up and soften delicate settings. Flying? It belongs in hand luggage, full stop — checked bags are handled with far less care than your grandmother's pearls deserve.

What to Take and What to Leave Behind

A coastal trip is not the moment for your most fragile heirlooms. Opals, in particular, dislike sudden temperature changes, and soft stones such as pearls and turquoise scratch easily against sand. If a piece is irreplaceable or has a loose setting, it is safer at home in a drawer.

What works beautifully by the sea? Sterling silver, stainless steel, gold, and well-set gemstones like sapphires and diamonds. Nautical designs — anchors, shells, compasses, rope twists — tend to be made from hardier metals anyway, which is one more reason they make such good travel companions. Take two or three pieces you can mix and match rather than a whole jewellery box.

Pack a Small Cleaning Cloth

This is the tip people thank me for most often. Tuck a small, soft polishing cloth into your roll case — the kind that comes with spectacles works perfectly, provided it is clean and lint-free.

Use it at the end of each day. Wipe sun cream, salt and sweat from metal and stones before you put anything away. That single minute of care prevents the dull grey film that builds up on silver after a few days by the sea, and it stops abrasive grit from being sealed into a pouch overnight. If a piece has seen a lot of sand, rinse it in fresh water first, pat it dry with a towel, then polish.

After the Beach: Everyday Habits

Think about when you actually wear your jewellery. Sun cream should go on first, jewellery second — always. The reverse leaves a greasy residue trapped under settings that is genuinely difficult to shift.

• Swimming: take rings and bracelets off before you go in. Chlorine and salt both attack metal over time, and cold water shrinks fingers.
• Sand: never brush sand off a piece with your hand. Rinse it away.
• Damp towels: do not let jewellery sit against wet fabric in a beach bag.
• Before bed: everything back in its pouch, cloth wiped, roll case zipped.
